God Richly Blessed Me Today

My daughter asked me to color with her today, just as she does every other day of the week. After telling her “no” for too many days in a row, I said “yes” today. But it wasn’t without reluctance. I thought of the piles of laundry that needed to be done, floors that needed sweeping, errands to be completed, and bills to be paid. Sunday is my “catch up” day when my husband is around to help with the kids. It’s the one day of the week when I feel like I can actually accomplish something. If I spent time coloring and not accomplishing, I would start the week already behind on my to-do list. But despite my reluctance, I said “yes” to coloring because a child’s heart can only tolerate hearing “no” so many times.

After my daughter removed the art supplies she handed me this card to color.

“May God richly bless you today.”

Those simple words granted my overwhelmed mind a new perspective.

I suddenly went from burdened to blessed as I silently noted a few ways that God had blessed me today, richly blessed me, to be exact.

He blessed me with a daughter who wants little more than a few minutes of quality time with her less than perfect mama.

He blessed me with children who are lively and creative, two traits that often emerge as messes on the floor.

He blessed me with piles of clothes that needed washing after keeping us warm and comfortable over the past week.

He blessed me during my trip to Wal-Mart, as I traded a handful of cash for a cartful of food to fill our pantry, fridge, and bellies.

He blessed me with a husband who parents his children right along with me and who also does most of the cleaning around here.

And he blessed me with time. Time so sit with my children. Time to listen to their laughter. Time to look them in the eye as they tell the same story for the millionth time. And time to color.
